Challenge is what I live for

By Ash Davidson of My Route To Help

My life has been an interesting one. I was brought up very well. My parents had some money, they showed me love and they taught me very well. I respect my parents because some of the decisions in my life has been influenced by them. My Mam has been a catalyst for where I am today. In 2007 I sat my GCSE's I did well but not well enough, I only managed to get a D grade in English Language. Although at the time I was less worried about this the older I got the more it dawned that it would be the most important grade I would need and it had to be over a C. Two years later I resat the exam and got a B. Without this grade I would not of been accepted into University or had the opportunities to gain volunteering roles in the sector which I love which is helping people who are addicted to drugs.

My Dad has also influenced me a great deal. He is the most intelligent person I know. He can do everything, build computers, rewire a home, decorate, build, fix, write you name it he can do it. Unfortunately for him he missed last year of his schooling and has no paper to show for his skills. From a very very young age he would tell me that school was important, that I should stick in and get as many qualifications as possible. I have took this on board with great effect. I now have a full set of GCSE's 4 B's 5 C's 1 D. I also have 3 A-levels and just finishing my degree in the next 5 months. It was a challenge to live up to this, I wanted to impress my family and at the time I felt like a failure but now I can look and say to myself I am proud.

Fast forward to 2011, I am coming to the end of my degree which will set me free from education, I am 20 years old and I am hungry for a full time job in the sector of which I have been interested in for some time. Originally I choose to do my course which is called " Policing & Community Safety" because I wanted to be a Police Officer. Now this has changed. I want to help people who are addicted to drugs.I believe ill get more satisfaction by helping people in need than putting people behind bars. April 2011 was a turning point in my life. I volunteered to be a substance misuse worker for an organisation called CRI. I applied and thought ill never get a chance, I was wrong. Two days later I got an interview and a few weeks passed I got offered the role. I can honestly say It was the best feeling ever knowing I had got the role. It was on level par with passing my driving test and landing my first ever job at 16.

This is now my biggest challenge in life. Succeeding as a volunteering hoping for employment in the future. Spending reviews are due in August 2012 so fingers crossed I can challenge myself to prove to everyone I am a perfect for the job. By getting this role it inspired me to make a website. I thought to myself "What is the point of only helping people in my city?" This led to the invention of www.myroutetohelp.co.uk It started off as a blog and it soon moved to basic drug knowledge. It then moved into addiction and harm reduction. Now at its present state it offers the previous and now drug related news, a forum and it allows people to share their own stories which is labelled as "Route To Help". I have discovered that people enjoy talking on a wide scale about addictions and previous experiences which is great for them and great for people who read it for extra motivation.

My life is only beginning to start. Lets keep it going and succeed towards the future and abolish addiction

University student studying Policing & Community Safety and also work in the retail sector for some extra month. I am a volunteer drug-worker and this is what I crave do in the future. By been a volunteer it motivated me to make the website www.myroutetohelp.co.uk I set this website up in the summer 2011. Its grew massively and changed direction many times. I wanted a website which offers basic drug and addiction knowledge and for people to share their own stories of addiction to others. Recently I have created a message board for my website on www.myroutetohelp.com

Welcome to Qondio Blackout7. I am a little confused what scoring over a C has to do with volunteering to help people addicted to drugs.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Thanks for the comment. Its more the opportunity of been accepted into University to allow me the chance to volunteer with that role which is linked to my course.
